Syria: The Siege of Eastern Ghouta

In April the area known as Eastern Ghouta will have been under siege for five years. In 2013 the Syrian government launched an offensive to recapture the suburb, which lies to the east of the capital, Damascus, cutting it off from the rest of the war-torn country. Bashar al-Assad’s forces and their Russian allies have carried out thousands of airstrikes on the enclave, some of which have involved the use of chemical weapons. In August 2013 hundreds of people were killed when rockets containing sarin gas were dropped on civilian areas, prompting widespread condemnation from the international community.
