United Arabs, Disunited Somalis

Relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Somalia are deteriorating rapidly. The tensions first emerged last year when Mogadishu refused to bow to pressure from the UAE and Saudi Arabia to cut ties with Qatar during the Gulf crisis. Then in February, the Somali government blocked a deal between Dubai-based DP World and the breakaway region of Somaliland to develop an economic zone around the port of Berbera. Last week Somali authorities seized $9.6m from a Royal Jet plane after it arrived at Mogadishu airport from Abu Dhabi; the UAE responded by withdrawing from a military training programme in Somalia and shutting down a hospital it operated in Mogadishu.
