On Monday, the chances of a peaceful settlement between Israel and the Palestinians seemed more remote than at any time since the 2014 Gaza war. At least 60 people were killed, including an eight-month-old girl, when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) fired live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas at Palestinians who had gathered at the Gaza-Israel border. More than 2,500 others were wounded, many of them suffering life-changing injuries. The violence was in stark contrast with the scenes in Jerusalem, where US and Israeli officials gathered for the opening of the US embassy in the city.
