Jihadist militant groups carried out multiple attacks across the porous Sahel region throughout 2019 and will continue to pose the most significant threat to security this year. Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad and Mauritania formed the G5 Sahel group in February 2014 in an attempt to improve coordination and tackle the rise in violence across the region. So far the G5, along with the French-led Operation Barkhane and UN peacekeeping forces, have had limited success in defeating the array of jihadist groups operating in the Sahel. The deaths of 13 French soldiers in a crash involving two helicopters in Mali in November sparked a debate in France about the purpose of the military operation, although President Emmanuel Macron reiterated his country’s commitment to the effort.
