The Battle of Algiers

On Wednesday, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika handed in his resignation to the president of the Constitutional Council. His decision to quit came after weeks of mass protests in the capital, Algiers, and increasing pressure from the ruling National Liberation Front (FLN). In a statement Bouteflika, who has been in power since 1999, asked for “forgiveness” and said he had failed in his duty. Thousands took to the streets to celebrate the announcement; however, for many the fight continues.
